Record volume CME bitcoin futures

Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the US company that operates the largest derivatives exchange in the world, has had its best day yet with its bitcoin futures.

In a tweet they say they have recorded a record volume. 22,500 contracts were traded on April 4. This number of contracts is equivalent to 112,700 bitcoins, about 500 million euros. Bitcoins are not actually traded in these contracts. The trade is settled in cash, so the contracts only track the bitcoin price.

The record volume comes shortly after the announcement that the CBOE, another renowned exchange, will not offer any new bitcoin contracts in the coming quarter.
