This “Ultra High Endurance” unit is specially designed for chia cultivation.

Recently launched cryptocurrency Chía uses storage space, rather than processing power, to protect its network. problem is that most standard hard drives cannot withstand wear and tear. Now, US hardware manufacturer PNY has released Chia’s first certified “agriculture” Solid State Drives (SSDs).

NVMe PNY LX2030 and LX3030 M.2 SSDs are “ultra high endurance” carals offering endurance ratings of up to 54,000 terabytes written (TBW). This is important, because tracking Chia requires “a lot of sustained bandwidth,” according to Manos de Jonmichaelel, vice president of storage business development at Chia; which, in turn, can wear out the units used for printing.

What is chia agriculture?

Where the Bitcoin network is protected by proof of work, which relies on processing power, and other blockchains use a proof of stake consensus mechanism, the Chia blockchain is protected by computer storage. Blockchain developers call this new system the “test of space and time.”

Chia producers write 100GB graphics to an SSD, fill it with hashes, which they then copy to a hard drive. Every time a new block is added to the Chia blockchain, its hash is compared to those of the farmers’ units; the one with the closest match receives the block reward.

However, as the SSD is constantly being overwritten with new graphics, growing write-intensive Chia can wear out the SSDs; some relationships suggest that a 512GB SSD could “go bust” in as little as 40 days of growing. Chia founder Bram Cohen has disputed the claim that Chia “burns” hard drives, as long as farmers stick with enterprise-class HDDs or SSDs.

Chia has also caused computer storage shortages in some regions, as farmers compete for the hardware they need. Chia Network President Gene Hoffman recently assuming “We’ve somehow destroyed the short-term supply chain” for computer storage.

This is the problem that PNY aims to solve. Its SSDs are specifically designed for chia mining, using a combination of “an advanced artificial intelligence engine, LDPC, and Flash I / F to improve NAND endurance.” This means, according to Chia, that the 1TB LX3030 will be able to create 2 petabytes (PB) of graphics before it runs out. LX2030 is available in a 2TB caral, while the LX3030 is available in 1TB and 2TB variants.

With the advent of heavy duty SSDs designed specifically for chia mining, cryptocurrency advocates hope that the problems of excessive wear and tear and hardware shortages are behind them.
