Price reaches $2100: Bitcoin celebrates Pizza Day

The price of bitcoin has reached a record high of more than 2100 dollars (1895 euros) today. But where did it all start? When was value first assigned to bitcoins? That happened on May 22, 2010, when two pizzas were bought for 10,000 bitcoins. Today, these bitcoins represent a value of almost 19 million euros.

Seven years ago, on May 18, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz proposed on the Bitcointalk forum that two large pizzas be delivered in exchange for 10,000 bitcoins. A few days later, May 22, 2010, he managed to receive pizzas against payment of the (then) almost worthless bitcoins. It became a historic day in Bitcoin history: for the first time, Bitcoins had value.

Today is also a day celebrated by the Bitcoin enthusiasts, baptized Bitcoin Pizza Day . This year, the celebration coincides with record highs in the price of a bitcoin: at the time of writing, it is well above 1800 euros. Enough reason to celebrate and order another pizza with bitcoins!
